Convergent Production (Problem Solving)

Convergent Production Details
Definition: The production of correct answers where a “solution” is something more than mere retrieval; it requires the student to generate an answer from given knowledge and emphasizes achieving a conventionally accepted best answer.

Problem-solving with:

  • Figural Units (NFU)
  • Symbolic Systems (NSS)
  • Symbolic Transformations (NST)
  • Symbolic Implications (NSI)

Academic Skill

  • Psycho-motor coordination
  • Application of numerical facts
  • Speed of word recognition
  • Form reasoning and logic

Curricular Area

  • Writing
  • Arithmetic
  • Reading
  • Mathematics

Strengths if ability is well-developed:

  • Neat and careful with details
  • Good command of arithmetic processes
  • Able to scan data rapidly; excellent for programming
  • Able to utilize good reasoning and logic

Consequences if ability is not well-developed:

  • May be slow at work requiring coordination of hand and eyes
  • Difficulty with “seeing” arithmetic solutions
  • Will lose place while reading; skipping words or lines
  • Will have difficulty with “thought” problems

Figural
NFU
Clients are asked to replicate a series of shapes.

NFU

NSS
Clients are asked to find the missing step in a simple arithmetic equation.

NSS

seMantic
N.A.

Symbolic
NSI
Clients are asked to generate the answer to a symbolic problem based on a key.

NSI

NST
There are two components to the NST sub-test. In one, clients are asked to find the name of an animal in a sentence.

NST

In the other, clients are asked to take letters in unusual orientations and divide them into individual words.
